Moving forward I found an article on answers.com called, Industrial Wastewater Treatment. Here’s what this article had to say:

“Wastewater streams that are toxic or refractory should be treated at the source, and there are a number of technologies available. For example, wet air oxidation of organic materials at high temperature and pressure (2000 lb/in. or 14 kilopascals and 550°F or 288°C) is restricted to very high concentrations of these substances. Macroreticular (macroporous) resins are specific for the removal of particular organic materials, and the resin is regenerated and used again. Membrane processes, particularly reverse osmosis, are high-pressure operations in which water passes through a semipermeable membrane, leaving the contaminants in a concentrate. The state of Florida has also posted information on one of their web sites. So what we’ve found through our research is, wastewater treatment is basically the filtering of water that has been used for some purpose, whether in manufacturing, food production, or agricultural. What we are looking at is water that has been “contaminated” by solids or metals or other substances that make it “waste.” So, in the wastewater treatment process, we desire to remove those contaminates and return the wastewater back into water.

The most elementary meaning of industrial wastewater treatment could be, taking wastewater and turning it back into plain water by removing all contaminants.

If too much untreated sewage or other organic matter is added to a lake or stream, dissolved oxygen levels will drop too low to support sensitive species of fish and other aquatic life. Wastewater treatment systems are designed to digest much of the organic matter before the wastewater is released so that this will not occur.”[2]

“Treatment systems use physical, chemical, and biological processes. The primary treatment physically removes large solids using grates, screens, and settling tanks. The secondary treatment promotes growth of bacteria and other microbes that break down the organic wastes.”[2]

“These biodegradation processes also take place in streams, lakes, and oceans, but the purification systems in nature can easily be overloaded with input of too much organic waste. Secondary treatment prevents this type of pollution by degrading most of the organic matter before the water is released into the environment.”[2]

“Tertiary treatment is used only where it is needed to protect the receiving waters from excess nutrients. In tertiary treatment, the concentrations of phosphorus or nitrogen are reduced through biological or chemical processes. Disinfection kills disease-causing organisms, most commonly through chlorination.”[2]

Although the wastewater treatment process outlined above if for sewage, there are some similarities to the treatment of wastewater industrial plants. I’m sure if the water is being returned to the environment, the WEF will in some way be involved.

Is a water shortage looming just over the horizon? According to an article written in December 1999, entitled "Global Water Shortage Looms In New Century", we are on the verge of a major global water shortage.

A quote from the article states "The World Bank reports that 80 countries now have water shortages that threaten health and economies while 40 percent of the world – more than 2 billion people – have no access to clean water or sanitation."[1]

I realize this article may have been written just a little over ten years ago, so we’ll fast forward to the year 2009 and the UN summit for climate change that took place in Copenhagen, Denmark. One statement says, "global pressure on freshwater resources is increasing, mainly through changes in global population and income levels, which have led to an increase in demand for water intensive products such as meat, sugar and cotton." [2]

There are many differing thoughts and opinions with regards to climate change; however, the facts remain that "increasing population, industry, economic growth and urbanization put additional stress on the provision of clean water from dwindling reserves."[2] These factual statements cannot and should not be overlooked. We, as individuals should be doing our part to conserve water, or suggest to manufacturing that recycling wastewater is a viable option to the conservation of fresh water.

“More than 1 billion people are currently living without clean drinking water, and an estimated 3 billion people could be facing similar water shortages in less than 45 years.”[1] That quote comes from the SixWise.com web site. In an article on the site, the author writes about the growing concern facing the world in the years to come.

This is not the only place on the Internet that’s showing concern over the looming water shortage. Some organizations, including NASA and World Health Organization (WHO), are predicting that approximately 4 billion people will be facing “severe” water shortages by the year 2050. And the water shortage could hit the southwestern United States
as early as 2025, a scary thought if you live in that part of the states. This is not new news, as it’s been a round for over a century now. However, today it’s becoming more and more publicized.

The World Water Council (WWC) warns of the issues facing many countries throughout the world. The WWC was “established in 1996 in response to increasing concern from the global community about world water issues. In the last post I talked about the Advantages of using wind power as a alternative energy source. Lets look at some of the disadvantages.

Disadvantages
Wind power must compete with conventional generation sources on a cost basis. Depending on how energetic a wind site is, the wind farm may or may not be cost competitive. Even though the cost of wind power has decreased dramatically in the past 10 years, the technology requires a higher initial investment than fossil-fueled generators. The major challenge to using wind as a source of power is that the wind is intermittent and it does not always blow when electricity is needed. Wind energy cannot be stored (unless batteries are used); and not all winds can be harnessed to meet the timing of electricity demands.

They said that wind power must compete with conventional generation sources on a cost basis. I believe this cost will be received back in do time with the savings. I don?t know about you but I don?t know of any power source that can be saved with out the use of batteries. Yes if you live in a place that the wind will not blow for several days thin you might want to reconsider your alternative energy source. Can you tell me wear in the world the wind don?t blow for that long? I live in Kansas the wind never quits blowing.

Good wind sites are often located in remote locations, far from cities where the electricity is needed. Wind resource development may compete with other uses for the land and those alternative uses may be more highly valued than electricity generation.

I live in Wichita and wind power is the alterative energy source that I see most cities going for.

Although wind power plants have relatively little impact on the environment compared to other conventional power plants, there is some concern over the noise produced by the rotor blades, aesthetic (visual) impacts, and sometimes birds have been killed by flying into the rotors. Most of these problems have been resolved or greatly reduced through technological development or by properly sitting wind plants.

I have never been to a wind farm so I do not know what kind of noise they produce. Why are we warred over some birds being killed by flying into the rotors. Is this going to stop people from putting up wind turbines on there properties I hope not!!

It is generally accepted that they formed from the fossilized remains of dead plants and animals[2] by exposure to heat and pressure in the Earth’s crust over hundreds of millions of years.[3] This biogenic theory was first introduced by Georg Agricola in 1556 and later by Mikhail Lomonosov in the 18th century.

It was estimated by the Energy Information Administration that in 2007 primary sources of energy consisted of petroleum 36.0%, coal 27.4%, natural gas 23.0%, amounting to an 86.4% share for fossil fuels in primary energy consumption in the world.

The burning of fossil fuels produces around 21.3 billion tonnes (21.3 gigatonnes) of carbon dioxide per year, but it is estimated that natural processes can only absorb about half of that amount, so there is a net increase of 10.65 billion tonnes of atmospheric carbon dioxide per year (one tonne of atmospheric carbon is equivalent to 44/12 or 3.7 tonnes of carbon dioxide).[6] Carbon dioxide is one of the greenhouse gases that enhances radiative forcing and contributes to global warming, causing the average surface temperature of the Earth to rise in response, which climate scientists agree will cause major adverse effects.

Now, again we know Global warning is all a hoax but I wanted to include every thing that Wikipedia, said about Fossil fuels. Now lets look at Nuclear Fission.. Wow the NF word that sounds scary.

In nuclear physics and nuclear chemistry, nuclear fission is a nuclear reaction in which the nucleus of an atom splits into smaller parts, often producing free neutrons and lighter nuclei, which may eventually produce photons (in the form of gamma rays). Fission of heavy elements is an exothermic reaction which can release large amounts of energy both as electromagnetic radiation and as kinetic energy of the fragments (heating the bulk material where fission takes place). For fission to produce energy, the total binding energy of the resulting elements has to be higher than that of the starting element. Fission is a form of nuclear transmutation because the resulting fragments are not the same element as the original atom.

Nuclear fission produces energy for nuclear power and to drive the explosion of nuclear weapons. Both uses are made possible because certain substances called nuclear fuels undergo fission when struck by free neutrons and in turn generate neutrons when they break apart.

This makes possible a self-sustaining chain reaction that releases energy at a controlled rate in a nuclear reactor or at a very rapid uncontrolled rate in a nuclear weapon.

The amount of free energy contained in nuclear fuel is millions of times the amount of free energy contained in a similar mass of chemical fuel such as gasoline, making nuclear fission a very tempting source of energy; however, the products of nuclear fission are radioactive and remain so for significant amounts of time, giving rise to a nuclear waste problem.

Concerns over nuclear waste accumulation and over the destructive potential of nuclear weapons may counterbalance the desirable qualities of fission as an energy source, and give rise to ongoing political debate over nuclear power.

Hello everyone on this great day the Lord has made for us on this 29 day of January 2010. As I said before I’m going to take a brake from defining the word alternative energy for a while and focus on some news. The first story comes from Alternative Energy News Blog. The carbon footprint that automobiles leave is about to change, and that change is going to happen much sooner than we think. While it is unlikely that the Micron will replace every car on the road, it will present a very interesting alternative to daily travel. This unique design is eye catching and more.

While it would be nice to think that the environmental problems the world is facing would wake people up and get them to carpool, most people still insist on driving their own car to work every single day. The need for independence is understandable and appreciated, but if most people are doing nothing more than going to work and going home, why continue to waste gas and hurt the environment?

These are the direct concerns that the Micron addresses. Being electric, the emissions issues are immediately settled and being so compact, the congestion on the road will clear up. Imagine 4 vehicles that can hold up to two people that can fit into a parking space of just one car. The amount of city congestion that would be alleviated is simply staggering to even think about. The days of having the SUV in the garage for nothing more than shopping trips may be soon upon us.

The Micron is still being tested and is currently scheduled to be released in 2012. Oddly enough, that is the same year that the Mayan calendar predicts will be the end of the world. While it is unlikely that the destruction that they have in mind will occur, the world as we know it is definitely changing. Instead of the end of the world, it could truly be a new beginning.

Designed as a single, integrated unit to fit in the user’s garage, Honda’s next generation Solar Hydrogen Station reduces the size of the system, while producing enough hydrogen (0.5kg) via an 8-hour overnight fill for daily commuting (10,000 miles per year) for a fuel cell electric vehicle.

The previous solar hydrogen station system required both an electrolyzer and a separate compressor unit to create high pressure hydrogen. The compressor was the largest and most expensive component and reduced system efficiency. By creating a new high differential pressure electrolyzer, Honda engineers were able to eliminate the compressor entirely ? a world’s first for a home use system. This innovation also reduces the size of other key components to make the new station the world’s most compact system, while improving system efficiency by more than 25% (value calculated based on simulations) compared to the solar hydrogen station system it replaces.

Compatible with a “Smart Grid” energy system, the Honda Solar Hydrogen Station would enable users to refill their vehicle overnight without the requirement of hydrogen storage, which would lower CO2 emissions by using less expensive off-peak electrical power. During daytime peak power times, the Solar Hydrogen Station can export renewable electricity to the grid, providing a cost benefit to the customer, while remaining energy neutral.

It sounds like this is a step closer to an alternative energy source. I just can?t see staying overnight for a fuel stop I?m just use to a 10 or 15min fuel stop. Some times I?m running behind and I want to do a NASCAR type of pit stop. I have a lot of work to do on my alternative energy ways.

In so doing, they can cover 100% of the total project costs including, in most cases, monies the developer has already expensed for soft costs, pre-development, etc. In other words, they will allow the developer to recover capital that has already been invested in the project by including it in the total financing amount.

Compensatory Balance: By allowing the developer to recover hard and soft costs, the investment fund recognizes that the developer’s risk capital will eventually be withdrawn from the project. As a result, they require that the developer place a cash deposit of up to 10% of the project cost in an account at a major bank as a compensatory balance. Current project equity or current monies injected into project will not be allowed in lieu of the required deposit because, in most cases, the developer will be allowed to recover those costs.

The deposit is not a fee. It is an offsetting balance designed to ensure that the developer has an ongoing financial stake in the project. This balance is maintained while the developer receives ongoing monthly draws from the investment fund, allowing the developer to recoup the developer?s costs. The compensatory balance is held on deposit in the developer/project name until a predetermined exit date when it is returned in its entirety, plus interest. While on deposit, the money will earn 9% to 12% interest–a rate significantly higher than most investment alternatives. Financing Advantages:

? The developer pays no interest during the entire construction period–saving millions of dollars in interest expense;

Out of the University of California this story and your not going to believe it. They have found a way to make tobacco plants in to solar cells. Who would think that something people smoke would be used for an alternative energy source.

The science behind it is actually pretty simple (at least in explanation form) and pretty amazing. By using a genetically engineered virus, scientists were able to literally transform the cells of the plants to create synthetic solar cells. Now this is way out of Don Conrad?s head what about you?

Instead of creating some new form of tobacco plant, I think some people already tried that one. they are actually applying their chemistry to full grown tobacco plants. Their custom-made virus is sprayed on the plants and then it is time to sit back and let it work its magic. The virus infects a cell which then enables the virus to spread just as any other virus would. However you do not smoke it. As the infected cells form, they are creating artificial chromophores that make high powered electrons out of light. This is a very new way of making alternative energy.

All this is done before the plants are harvested, and once harvested, the structures are extracted and put into a liquid solution to dissolve. It is generally accepted that they formed from the fossilized remains of dead plants and animals[2] by exposure to heat and pressure in the Earth’s crust over hundreds of millions of years.[3] This biogenic theory was first introduced by Georg Agricola in 1556 and later by Mikhail Lomonosov in the 18th century.

It was estimated by the Energy Information Administration that in 2007 primary sources of energy consisted of petroleum 36.0%, coal 27.4%, natural gas 23.0%, amounting to an 86.4% share for fossil fuels in primary energy consumption in the world.

Non-fossil sources in 2006 included hydroelectric 6.3%, nuclear 8.5%, and (geothermal, solar, tide, wind, wood, waste) amounting 0.9 percent.[5] World energy consumption was growing about 2.3% per year. Fossil fuels are non-renewable resources because they take millions of years to form, and reserves are being depleted much faster than new ones are being formed. The production and use of fossil fuels raise environmental concerns. A global movement toward the generation of renewable energy is therefore under way to help meet increased energy needs.

The burning of fossil fuels produces around 21.3 billion tonnes (21.3 gigatonnes) of carbon dioxide per year, but it is estimated that natural processes can only absorb about half of that amount, so there is a net increase of 10.65 billion tonnes of atmospheric carbon dioxide per year (one tonne of atmospheric carbon is equivalent to 44/12 or 3.7 tonnes of carbon dioxide).[6] Carbon dioxide is one of the greenhouse gases that enhances radiative forcing and contributes to global warming, causing the average surface temperature of the Earth to rise in response, which climate scientists agree will cause major adverse effects.

Now, again we know Global warning is all a hoax but I wanted to include every thing that Wikipedia, said about Fossil fuels. Now lets look at Nuclear Fission.. Wow the NF word that sounds scary.

In nuclear physics and nuclear chemistry, nuclear fission is a nuclear reaction in which the nucleus of an atom splits into smaller parts, often producing free neutrons and lighter nuclei, which may eventually produce photons (in the form of gamma rays). Fission of heavy elements is an exothermic reaction which can release large amounts of energy both as electromagnetic radiation and as kinetic energy of the fragments (heating the bulk material where fission takes place). For fission to produce energy, the total binding energy of the resulting elements has to be higher than that of the starting element. Fission is a form of nuclear transmutation because the resulting fragments are not the same element as the original atom.

Nuclear fission produces energy for nuclear power and to drive the explosion of nuclear weapons. Both uses are made possible because certain substances called nuclear fuels undergo fission when struck by free neutrons and in turn generate neutrons when they break apart.

This makes possible a self-sustaining chain reaction that releases energy at a controlled rate in a nuclear reactor or at a very rapid uncontrolled rate in a nuclear weapon.

The amount of free energy contained in nuclear fuel is millions of times the amount of free energy contained in a similar mass of chemical fuel such as gasoline, making nuclear fission a very tempting source of energy; however, the products of nuclear fission are radioactive and remain so for significant amounts of time, giving rise to a nuclear waste problem.

Concerns over nuclear waste accumulation and over the destructive potential of nuclear weapons may counterbalance the desirable qualities of fission as an energy source, and give rise to ongoing political debate over nuclear power.

Will, as I was typing the last story about alternative energy and renewable energy I got a couple of emails. First one is about wood -powered cars yep you heard right wood-powered cars. Now this is going to rub Some of them tree saving people the wrong way. I never heard of such thing before. The full story is below.

Few people that are ripping around the streets in today?s gas guzzlers will remember wood-powered cars, but if things continue the way they are, they may be lucky enough to see one pull up next to them at the light. Wood-powered cars are starting to pop up again as yet another means of saving our fossil fuels. Wood-powered cars made their first big appearance in Europe during WWII.

A wood gas generator was attached to the vehicle so that the drivers could save fuel, yet still keep their cars operational. Looking at some of the pictures from back then, the cars literally look like they have a wood-burning furnace attached to the hood or trunk. It may have looked funny, but it was actually very efficient. While this technology showed incredible advancements over the next decade, it became obsolete as soon as the war was over and countries started to see some normalcy come back into their lives. With the apparent need to conserve gas for the war effort gone, the odd looking devices were no longer used and the automobile returned to normalcy.

Because of the renewed effort to save our fossil fuels and reduce the carbon footprint that is left by current automobiles, wood-powered cars are again getting some attention. There is a renewed interest and there is actually somewhat of a cult following starting to develop all over the world. While the contraptions may look quite a bit different from the antiques that were used during WWII, they are still serving the same purpose.

There is one obvious drawback to the vehicles, and that is that they are definitely not aerodynamic. Whether the car owner chooses to mount the furnace to their car or pull it via a trailer, there is quite a bit more drag created when exploring the local roads. However, this particular power source is not about speed, it is about conservation. Inflammation has been called the silent killer. Inflammation is a process in which the body’s white blood cells and chemicals help protect us from infection and foreign substances such as bacteria and viruses. However, "When inflammation occurs, chemicals from the body are released into the blood or affected tissues. This release of chemicals increases the blood flow to the area of injury or infection and may result in redness and warmth. Some of the chemicals cause a leak of fluid into the tissues, resulting in swelling. This process may stimulate nerves and cause pain." [1]

We usually describe the process of inflammation like a series of dominos all set up and ready for something to tip over the first domino and start the chain reaction. The first one tips over the second one, which tips over the third one and so on. This is called the "domino effect." Clever people can set up these dominos in an amazing array of complicated designs.

Inflammation is a process much like that. A single event may trigger a domino effect of inflammatory reactions. While many of the reactions are fairly predictable, many others are not. They seem to involve amazingly complicated patterns unique to the individual. Still, all inflammation exhibits five basic signs caused by four basic triggers.

Signs of inflammation

With tissue injury, inflammation is part of the healing process:

1. Redness: An injured area needs an increased supply of nutrients and proteins carried in the blood. So, blood supply increases and the tissue turns red (Latin: rubor).
2. Swelling : The injured area is bathed in healing proteins and substances to control bleeding, as well as an increased supply of plasma for transport of waste. This causes the injured area to swell (Latin: tumor).
3. Pain: The injured area needs to be protected. We instinctively guard an injury because we feel or anticipate pain (Latin: dolor).
4. Heat: The damaged tissue now becomes weakened and so it is susceptible to infection. White blood cells rush to the area and defend the fragile cells from microbes. A sign that this is working is heat or fever in the damaged area (Latin: calor).
5. Loss of Function: This process is accompanied by a reduction in function of the injured area until it is healed (Latin: functio laesa).

The "dominoes" fall in the same predictable pattern if the injury is a sprained ankle or heart attack! No matter what triggers the inflammation, the process is the same.

Inflammation triggers

Inflammation is the response to four basic triggers: trauma, toxins, deficiency and stress. All four of these triggers cause tissue injury. Our body responds to injury with inflammation.

Trauma
We usually think of trauma as a direct injury that causes pain and distress. However, a sedentary lifestyle is also a serious cause of trauma. Why? Because our body was made to move! The more we move, the more we are able to move ? and the more we want to move. The less we move, the less we are able to move. Our muscles and other tissues shorten and atrophy. Then, any movement causes injury. So, the less we move, the less we want to move.

Toxins
Toxicity causes cells to rupture in the same way that a needle causes a balloon to pop. Is there any doubt that we live in a toxic world? An article in National Geographic estimated that humans create 700,000 tons of pollution and waste every day! Between these "exotoxins" (toxins created outside our body), and "endotoxins" (toxins created inside our body), we are bathed in inflammation-producing poison every moment of every day. Any successful strategy for reducing inflammation must address the level of toxins we face.

Deficiency
Deficiencies also cause inflammation. For example, an omega-3 essential fatty acid (EFA) deficiency leaves the cell walls weak and unable to function normally. Again, cells are like balloons. If the balloon membrane is too thin, even a normal amount of air will make it pop. If the cell wall is too thin because of an omega-3 EFA deficiency, even normal cell activity will cause the cell to pop and trigger the domino effect of inflammation. Stress
Emotional distress is also a cause of inflammation. When we appraise a situation to be stressful, our brain releases chemicals called catecholamines that trigger the release of many inflammatory processes. For example, stress causes the release of insulin ? a pro-inflammatory hormone. Too much stress over too long a period of time will cause insulin resistance (IR), which is associated with obesity. Other stress-related chemicals reduce circulation to our digestive and reproductive systems and trigger inflammation from blood deficiency. Stress is a serious cause of inflammation!
